    Department of Botany

The Department of Botany offers a degree of Bachelor of Science in Botany taught by highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty committed to excellence in teaching, research and all-round development of students. The faculty regularly attend state, national and international seminars and conferences and have publications in national and international journals. Well-equipped laboratories, PTC Laboratory, Green House, Botanical Garden, Herbarium and Museum of Natural History are distinctive features of the department.

Regular field visits, institutional visits and study tours to places of botanical interest in and outside Goa are an integral part of the teaching of Botany to give a complete understanding of the subject along with field experience. The other highlights of the department include regular display of ‘Campus Blooms’, ‘Biology News’ and ‘Values and Personality Development’. Guest lectures, workshops and certificate courses are organized on a regular basis. Some of the workshops organized include ‘Terrarium & Kokedama’, ‘Developing Botanical Drawing Skills’, ‘Home Wet Waste & Garden Waste Composting’ and ‘Herbal Soap Making’ in an attempt to encourage skill development in students. Skill-based course content in Floriculture & Herbal Technology has created a lot of interest and enthusiasm among students. As part of extension services, the department conducts programmes for students of neighbouring schools and higher secondary schools. The department organised a certificate course in ‘Bakery’ with a tie up with KVIC, Govt. of India with EDP Training that would help participants in obtaining financial assistance under the PMEG Programme.

Our students excel at the final year examinations in Botany conducted by the Goa University. Career opportunities for students include continuing further studies to obtain M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degree; continuing research as a career; employment as teachers/professors in academic institutions; employment in state and national organizations and administrative services; self-employment opportunities as landscape gardeners, florists, horticulturists, progressive farmers, etc.
