A group of 29 students of semester V BSc Zoology visited Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), North Goa, division of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ela Farm, along with two faculty members Ms. Andrea D’Souza and Ms. Soniya Dessai, as a part of the prescribed curriculum for these students. Mr. Rahul M. Kulkarni, Assistant Chief Technical Officer, KVK (North Goa) guided us through the farm.

Mr. H. R. C. Prabhu, Sr. Scientist and Head In charge, explained about the various units operated on the farm. He also discussed different varieties of Goan crops and the scope of agro tourism in Goa. Opportunities in apiculture and Vermiculture along with schemes available for entrepreneurs especially women entrepreneurs in Goa were emphasized. Mr. Prabhu demonstrated techniques of apiculture and showed the setup operated in the farm for Apis cerana indica bee.

The group visited plantations with intercropping allowing plants to be accommodated in small areas, generating more income for the farmer. The group also visited the vermicomposting unit. Mr. Kulkarni explained the process of preparation of a vermibed, feeding of worms and harvesting of the vermicompost. We were also informed about the sale of vermicompost and worms as well.

The group also visited ICAR campus where they were shown piggery, poultry, aquaculture and dairy units. Overall, it was a very enlightening and learning experience.
