“Bread and Belonging” is a documentary film by Sonia Filinto about the dwindling tradition of making bread (local pao) in Goa. The Department of English, Carmel College of Arts, Science and Commerce for Women hosted the screening of this documentary for the college staff, students and ex-students on 14th January 2023. Around 209 students from the college attended this screening. Dr. Glenis Mendonca welcomed the audience and introduced the film maker, Sonia Filinto to the audience. After a brief introduction to the background of the film by Sonia, it was screened to an enraptured audience.
The film addresses issues of hardships faced by the Goan poders and bakers who earlier baked and distributed bread using traditional methods. With vivid glimpses of the Poderamchem Fest at Succoro, the film depicted how these traditions were gradually being passed into the hands of non-Goans. The fifty-minute film evoked a lot of questions from the students and staff. Roxana Singh, HoD, Department of English proposed the vote of thanks.
