The faculty and students of the department of chemistry organized a demonstration session for the students of St. Mary’s high school Varca on the 1st of March 2023 as part of the science day celebration. The session was from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. A total of 180 students from standard V to standard X of the school benefited from the session. Two faculty from the department, Ms. Fatima Fernandes and Dr. Daniel Coutinho along with 8 student from T.Y.B.Sc. were part of the team.
The session began with a brief introduction to chemistry by Ms. Fatima Fernandes. Ms. Fatima also spoke about our college and encouraged the students to consider Carmel College for their higher education. The students then presented their chemistry demos.
Ms. Sabrina showed the students the preparation of natural acid-base indictors from Hibiscus flower and the colour change it gives to house hold items that are acidic or basic in nature. Ms. Nauseen and Ms. Khushi demonstrated an oscillating reaction.
Ms. Celeste demonstrated a wonderful redox experiments using items that students use in their house every day. Ms. Acima showed the students the reduction of potassium permanganate and the various colour changes it undergoes. Ms. Raziya demonstrated the different colour changes with universal indicator with different acids and bases.
Ms. Lynessa showed the students a magical chemistry experiment of conversion of water to juice to milk to sprite. Ms. Esha presented to the students the traffic light experiment.
Dr. Daniel demonstrated to the students various precipitation reactions, with different colour precipitated being formed from colourless solutions.
The staff and students of the school were intrigued and satisfied by the session. The session ended at 12:30 pm.
