National Science Day is celebrated on 28th February every year to mark the discovery of Raman Effect by the Indian physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. On this day, emphasis is laid on the culture and application of science for the welfare of people.
The Department of Botany, Carmel College of Arts, Science and Commerce for Women, Nuvem-Goa commemorated National Science Day on 28th February 2023 by organizing various displays, demonstrations and competitions with an aim to bring out the holistic development of students through national science day celebrations. The displays and demonstrations included herbal soaps, aroma therapy, dry flower arrangement, flower imprinting, resin art, book marks, coconut art, terrarium, Kokedama, natural Holi colours, composting, synthetic seeds and models. A sale of herbal soaps and resin art items prepared by Botany SEC students and plants was also put up on the occasion.
There was an overwhelming response with 479 visitors which included students and faculty from Fr. Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Verna; Loyola Higher Secondary School of Science and Arts, Margao and Carmel Higher Secondary School, Nuvem as well as students and faculty of our College showing keen interest in the various exhibits prepared by the second year and third year students of Botany.
Thirteen students participated in the ‘Glass Bottle Painting’ competition wherein Ms. Deepasha Naik emerged as the winner. Among the twelve teams taking part in the in ‘Eco-friendly Rangoli’ competition, the entry of Ms. Geeta Angadi and Ms. Jennisa Noronha was the best.
It was indeed a very knowledgeable and interactive day; and the purpose to develop students’ interest in science related activities was achieved.
