As a community outreach initiative, the Department of Zoology organised a Three-day Virtual Lecture Series supported by the Panaji Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society on the topic “Infertility: An Embryologist’s perspective in assisted reproductive technologies” from 21st to 23rd November, 2021. Logistic support was provided by GSBB in the form of Zoom platform. The resource person for the event was eminent human embryologist Dr. Kersi Avari from Embryology Academy for Research and Training, Mumbai. Infertility not only affects reproductive health, but also has various social, psychological, economic and physical implications. The stigma surrounding infertility can cause emotional stress, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Education and awareness to address understanding of the prevalence and determinants of fertility and infertility is very essential.
There were over 270 participants who registered for the event, from 8 Indian states and 2 countries. The event commenced on 21st November at 3 pm, with an introduction from the Organising Secretary Ms. Karen Braganza, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology.
The series opened with a word from the Head of the Institute, Dr. Sr. Maria Lizanne A.C. who appreciated the immense work done by the Department of Zoology to educate and spread awareness of various topics and issues concerning the environment and health. The opening remarks were shared by Dr. Shailesh Kamat, a renowned Gynaecologist and President, Panaji Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society. He expressed his concern about the myths surrounding Infertility and reproductive health, and said that the only way to clear these misconceptions is through creating awareness is necessary. He also extended his support to more such events in the future.
The topic for the first day of the series was ‘Andrology – Semenology & Male Infertility’ where Dr. Avari addressed various issues of male infertility and gradation and preparation of semen to be used for Artificial Reproductive Techniques. The topic for the second day was ‘Female Infertility’, that touched upon the problems of the female reproductive system. On the last day, Dr. Avari addressed the various techniques of artificial reproduction and the equipment and procedures used.
The question-answer sessions on all three days were moderated by Ms. Andrea D’Souza and on the last day Ms. Soniya Dessai proposed the Vote of Thanks. The lecture series ended on 23rd November at 5 pm.
