The Library of Carmel College in collaboration with the Department of English organised the Inter-class Spelling Bee Competition 2023. The competition consisted of two rounds. The first round (elimination round) was conducted on 27th October 2020 and the second round (final round) was conducted on 3rd February 2023 in the college auditorium.

The competition was open to all first-year students across all streams. The qualifying teams consisted of Ms. Aisha Khan and Ms. Zenia Maria Fernandes from FYBA-A and FYBA-B respectively, Ms. Akanksha Singh and Ms. Ranisha D’Souza from FYBSC-A and Ms. Mysha Da Costa and Ms. Roseann Menezes from FYBCOM-A.

The Head of the English Department, Ms. Roxana Singh, hosted the Spelling Bee. The onstage competition consisted of 4 rounds. The first round saw each team taking turns to spell the word assigned to them. In the second round, the meaning of the word was given to the teams and they had to choose and correctly pronounce the right answer from three similar-sounding words. In the third round each team had to spell as many words as they could in a time span of two minutes. The fourth and final round was a buzzer round where the teams had to hit the buzzer before the other teams and correctly spell the word.

After the totalling of the scores, team FYBA with 105 points emerged as the second runners-up; team FYBSC with 115 points were declared as the first runners-up; and despite a slow start in the first round, team FYBCOM-B managed to close the gap with 135 points and were declared as the winners. The Spelling Bee concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Ms. Smesha Pednekar.
