A talk on ‘Graphic Novels: Decoding Visual Storytelling’ was held at Carmel College of Arts, Science and Commerce for Women, Nuvem, Goa on 4 September 2026. The speaker was Ms. Rachel Dias, Assistant Professor and Coordinator, PG English, Chowgule College of Arts and Sciences, Margao. The Vice Principal, Dr. Aldina Barganza welcomed Ms. Dias to the campus. She was joined by the Manager Sr. Isha Priya A.C.and Sr. Aradhana A.C

Ms. Dias introduced the elements of the graphic novels to the students and showed how they differed from comics and manga. She dwelt on how visual storytelling could be seen as far back as in Egyptian hieroglyphics and the Bayeux tapestry. Her activities of drawing a sequence of stick figures, and another of drawing a character kept the students absorbed. Ms. Ayeesha Antao, coordinator, introduced the speaker. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Brian Mendonca who also recalled Kari – a graphic novel of Amruta Patil, a renowned graphic novelist from Goa.
