Activity Overview:
The students of S.Y.B.Sc. SEC (Herbal Technology), accompanied by the faculty, visited Biomed Ingredients Pvt. Ltd., located at Verna Industrial Estate, Verna, Goa. The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to industrial scale extraction and formulation of herbal and natural products and to understand quality and regulatory practices in the manufacturing of herbal products.
The visit began with a tour of the Raw Material Store, where the students observed how various raw materials are systematically stored and labelled to maintain quality and traceability. Next, they visited the Dispensing Room, where raw materials are carefully measured and prepared for processing according to batch requirements.
The students then witnessed the working of the Fluidized Bed Processor (FBP), which is used for drying herbal materials efficiently under controlled conditions. This was followed by a demonstration of the Vibrosifter with a Magnetic Grill, which ensures the removal of impurities and uniform particle sizing.
In the Dry Granulation Room, students observed the Roll Compactor, which is used to convert dry powders into granules without using any liquid binders—an important technique for moisture-sensitive materials. The visit concluded with a walk through the Final Goods Area, where finished products are stored before dispatch, following strict quality and safety protocols.
A special lecture by Dr. Krishna Nair provided students with valuable insights into the company’s operations. Dr. Nair explained that Biomed Ingredients Pvt. Ltd. deals with spices, herbal products, natural food colours, vitamins, and minerals, catering to both national and international markets. He also highlighted the importance of quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and research in the herbal industry.
