Activity Overview

Carmel Greens Club of the Department of Botany organized an Ecotrek to Cotigao on 7th September 2025 as part of its nature awareness and conservation initiative. The trek was aimed at connecting students with the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats and instilling in them a spirit of ecological sensitivity and adventure.

Located within the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, about 16 km from the ticket counter, lies the serene Kuskem village. On the way, participants passed through lush green paddy fields and soon entered the thickly forested terrain that marked the beginning of the climb. From here, the students and faculty members embarked on a 2 km adventurous walk through the crystal-clear streams, pebbly rocks and a series of steep steps leading uphill. As the trekkers proceeded, the sight of the towering mountains rising at a distance offered a breathtaking backdrop. The destination was the base of Kuskem waterfall.

The primary objective of the trek was to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural environment and to encourage sustainable eco-tourism practices among students. Beyond academics, the trek was also designed to build teamwork and a love for outdoor activities that strengthen the bond between youth and nature.

In total, 24 students accompanied by 3 faculty members, Dr. Divakar Mesta, Dr. Puja Sakhalkar and Dr. Kim Rodrigues, participated in the trek.

The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, taking in the beauty of the landscapes while also trying to capture their joy through photographs. It left everyone with cherished memories and a commitment towards conserving the environment and appreciating the wonders of biodiversity.
