The 17th “International Conference on Mercury as Global Pollutant” was held recently at IIT Hyderabad under the Minamata Convention. Prof Manoj Borkar was invited to present his research on “Mercury transfer and bioaccumulation in Tarantula of Western Ghats, a Biodiversity hotspot of Goa”. Borkar’s session was chaired by G Rambabu, senior scientist of Central Pollution Control Board, New Delhi.
Conference was attended by over 230 researchers from 32 countries that are signatory to the Minamata Convention. Prof Borkar & his collaborator Prof Asif Qureshi have previously demonstrated that Tarantulas are bioindicators of mercury Pollution and bioaccumulate a range of potentially toxic trace elements. During the conference Prof Borkar also met with Dr David Evers of Biodiversity Research Institute, US and Prof Luis Fernandez of Wake Forest University, North Carolina to explore possibilities of collaborative research.
