Department of Botany
The Department of Botany offers a degree of Bachelor of Science in Botany taught by highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty committed to excellence in teaching, research and all-round development of students giving them personal attention. The faculty regularly attend seminars and conferences and have publications in national and international journals. Well-equipped laboratories, Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory, Shade House, Botanical Garden, Herbarium and Museum of Natural History are distinctive features of the department. The department has received a major research project grant from the Goa State Research Foundation, Government of Goa, for “Study of Angiospermic and Microfungal Diversity associated with Myristica swamps of Goa” for a duration of 3 years starting from March 2024.
Regular field visits, institutional visits and study tours to places of botanical interest in and outside Goa are an integral part of the teaching of Botany to give a complete understanding of the subject. Guest lectures, workshops and certificate courses are organized on a regular basis for students. Skill-based courses floated under the NEP in ‘Nursery and Gardening’, ‘Post-harvest Technology of Fruits and Vegetables’, ‘Techniques in Floral Arrangement’, ‘Herbal Technology’ and ‘Mushroom Cultivation Technology’ are creating a lot of interest and enthusiasm among students. The certificate course in ‘Food Processing & Value Addition for Entrepreneurial Development’ organised in collaboration with the PG department of Food Technology of the College together with various workshops such as ‘Terrarium’, Kokedama’, ‘Home Wet Waste & Garden Waste Composting’, ‘Herbal Soap Making’ etc. conducted by experts are an attempt to equip students with skills to venture into entrepreneurship. As part of extension service, the department conducts programmes for students of neighbouring schools and higher secondary schools. The annual Science Day celebrations provide students a platform to be creative and showcase their talent. Career opportunities for students include continuing further studies to obtain M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degree in Botany; continuing research as a career; employment as teachers/professors in academic institutions; employment in state and national organizations and administrative services; self-employment opportunities as landscape gardeners, florists, horticulturists, progressive farmers, etc. besides other general employment openings requiring a graduate degree. Alumni of the department are employed in academic and research institutions and other organisations across the state.
