Objective(s) of the Activity:

  1. To link theoretical knowledge of plant diversity with field observations.
  2. To relate theoretical concepts of nursery management and gardening operations with practical field experience.

Activity Overview:

As part of the Semester II academic curriculum for the B.Sc. Botany (Major) course in Fundamentals of Botany (BOT-100) and the Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) in Nursery and Gardening (BOT-141), a field study trip was organized for 23 F.Y. B.Sc. Botany students to Strawberry Farm, Verlem, Netravali, on 14th March 2026. The visit was coordinated and accompanied by Ms. Meena Verdes and Dr. Kim Rodrigues. The objective of the trip was to integrate theoretical learning on plant diversity with field observations and to relate the concepts of nursery management and gardening operations with practical field experience.

During the visit, students observed the cultivation practices of strawberries and gained insights into soil preparation, irrigation methods, and crop maintenance techniques. In addition to strawberries, a variety of other crops were being cultivated at the farm, including chillies, long beans, cluster beans, brinjal, mustard, fennel, tomato, sugarcane, cashew, knol-khol, watermelon, native gooseberry, marigold, and gladiolus. This diversity provided students with an opportunity to study different plant species, their growth requirements, and cultivation methods in a practical setting.

This experiential learning opportunity enhanced students’ ability to identify plant species and deepened their understanding of nursery operations and gardening fundamentals. Overall, the visit was informative and enriching, helping students develop a deeper appreciation for agricultural practices and the importance of integrating scientific knowledge with practical experience.

Outcomes of the Activity:

  1. Students learned to identify plants and their key characteristics.
  2. Students understood the fundamentals of nursery management and gardening.
