Objective(s) of the Activity:

  1. To provide experiential learning by visiting sites of historical and architectural significance in Goa.
  2. To foster appreciation and respect for Goa’s cultural and architectural heritage among students.

Activity Overview:

The Department of History organised a field trip for SYBA History Major and Minor students on 9th October 2025. A total of 34 students participated, accompanied by three faculty members — Mr. Agnelo Dias, Ms. Anette Gomes, and Ms. Abigail Barreto.

The students departed from the college at around 8:30 a.m., with their first stop at the Aravalem Caves located in Sanquelim–Bicholim. The caves, dating back to the 6th century CE, were originally Buddhist caves later occupied by Hindus, as indicated by the presence of Shiva Lingas within.

The next destination was the San Estevam Fort, situated atop a hill. Here, the students learned that the fort was built in the mid-16th century by the Portuguese to guard the Mandovi River and prevent invasions by the Marathas and other enemies. Its significance declined after the expansion of Portuguese control into the New Conquests.

The final stop was Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where students explored the churches and convents, observing varied architectural styles, some in active use, others preserved as monuments. The site reflects the grandeur and cultural influence of the Portuguese Empire during its peak.

The field trip served as a meaningful experiential learning exercise, helping students link historical knowledge with physical evidence and gain a deeper appreciation of Goa’s layered past.

Outcomes of the Activity:

  1. Students enhanced their historical knowledge and understanding through direct experiential learning at key heritage sites.
  2. The field trip fostered a sense of appreciation for Goa’s cultural, architectural, and historical heritage.
