Department of Physics
About the Department
Established in 1964, the Department of Physics is one of the oldest departments at Carmel College, with a proud tradition of academic excellence, scientific exploration, and student development.
At Carmel College, we believe Physics is more than equations and theories—it is about discovering how the world works. From understanding the laws of nature to exploring modern technologies, we encourage students to think critically, ask questions, experiment, and develop scientific curiosity.
Our experienced faculty combines classroom teaching with practical experiments, projects, and interactive learning. Our well-equipped laboratory and open-laboratory policy allow students to use laboratory facilities during their free time to practice experiments, explore ideas, and develop scientific skills.
Learning extends beyond the classroom through educational study tours to leading research institutions, hands-on workshops, guest lectures, scientific competitions, quiz contests, robotics, computational physics, and quantum technologies.
The Department also facilitates internship opportunities for students at reputed institutions such as BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus, NIT Goa, and in industry. These internships offer valuable exposure to professional and research environments, helping students apply classroom learning, develop practical skills, and explore future career paths.
The Department encourages participation in research-oriented projects and scientific exhibitions, giving students opportunities to apply knowledge to real-world problems. With university rank holders, state-level achievers, and graduates pursuing higher education in India and abroad, we are committed to helping every student discover her potential.
The Department serves as a centre for the National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) and provides training for competitive entrance examinations such as the Goa University Admissions Ranking Test (GU-ART). Through guidance, practice tests, and exam preparation, we help students build confidence and prepare for postgraduate studies at leading institutions.
Whether your ambition is to become a scientist, educator, researcher, or technology professional, a degree in Physics at Carmel College can be the beginning of an exciting journey.

Students have also earned first place for a poster presentation at a state-level seminar on sustainable energy and renewable energy technology, gained recognition in state-level science exhibitions, and had three student projects selected for poster presentation at KAFALAK 2020.
Research and Innovation
The Department promotes scientific inquiry and innovation through faculty research, student projects, and academic collaborations. Faculty members have secured approximately ₹12 lakh in research grants, including:
- ₹10.8 lakh research project "Study of percolation pathways in alkali silicate glasses to understand and enhance electrical conduction properties" funded by UGC-DAE, Govt. of India.
- ₹5 lakh Start-up research project "Understanding Magnetocaloric and Magnetoresistive properties of Mn3SnC1-x Antiperovskite” funded by GSRF, Govt. of Goa.
Quantum Technologies Initiative: Faculty members of the Department are actively engaged in Quantum Technologies programmes and are part of the Directorate of Higher Education (DHE) Special Interest Group, working to promote awareness, education, and the development of quantum technologies across Goa.
In December 2025, the Department organised the five-day “Compute4Physics: Computational Thinking for Contemporary Physics Teaching” faculty development programme, introducing educators to Python, computational methods, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing.
Department Activities
Educational Study Tours: Visits to IISc Bengaluru, ISRO facilities, BARC Mumbai, and science museums expose students to research laboratories, scientific instruments, and career opportunities.

Workshops and Skill Development: Hands-on training in ExpEYES, robotics, Arduino, PCB designing, LaTeX, Mathematica, and computational tools builds practical and technical skills.

Science Celebrations and Competitions: National Science Day, National Space Day, International Moon Day, scientific quizzes, poster competitions, and exhibitions make learning engaging and interactive.

Scientific Exhibitions and Outreach: Participation in Vidnyan Dhara, KALPAK, state-level exhibitions, and science outreach programmes encourages students to present ideas and communicate scientific concepts.

Raman Club: Established in 2025, the student-led Raman Club encourages scientific curiosity through experiments, discussions, demonstrations, and collaborative learning.
