Objective(s) of the Activity:

  1. Introduce kitchen gardening and its role in healthy, sustainable living.
  2. Provide simple, practical steps to start and maintain a low-cost kitchen garden at home.

Activity Overview:

The Department of Botany, Carmel College of Arts, Science and Commerce for Women, Nuvem, Goa organized a guest lecture on ‘Kitchen Gardening: A Simple Step Towards Healthy Living’ for 31 undergraduate students of F.Y., S.Y. and T.Y. B.Sc. Botany on 28th March 2026. The guest lecture was delivered by Mrs. Shubra Prabhu Chodnekar, Co-founder & Proprietor of Prakrtiveda Ecosolutions, Sanvordem-Goa, and a proud alumna of the Department of Botany, batch of 2017. The session was organized under the institutional best practice “Caring for Soil.”

The lecture began with Mrs. Chodnekar sharing her entrepreneurial journey, highlighting the challenges and successes she encountered while establishing Prakrtiveda Ecosolutions. She inspired students by emphasizing how scientific knowledge, passion, and practical solutions can transform gardening into a sustainable and fulfilling venture.

During the session, she discussed the concept of kitchen gardening, explaining its benefits for healthy living and the importance of selecting suitable plants and adopting cost-effective gardening practices. Her insights and experiences motivated students to explore kitchen gardening as a manageable and rewarding activity at home.

The session was highly engaging, with students actively participating in the discussion and asking questions about her journey and tips for successful gardening. Overall, the lecture successfully inspired students, demonstrating how passion, innovation, and sustainable practices can make a meaningful difference in everyday life.

Outcomes of the Activity:

  1. Students gained an understanding of kitchen gardening basics, learned to select appropriate plants, and developed skills to start and maintain a simple, cost-effective garden that promotes healthier living.
