Activity Overview:
On January 29, 2025, the students of the Post-Graduate Department of Psychology, Carmel College of Arts, Science, and Commerce for Women, Nuvem, Goa, conducted a specialized session on self-care for the healthcare Professionals of Serena Palliative Care, titled “Setting Boundaries as a Form of Self-Care,”
The student facilitators delivered a structured presentation covering the following key areas of Defining Boundaries: Explaining the difference between rigid, porous, and healthy boundaries. The Cost of Over-Giving: Discussing “Compassion Fatigue” and how an inability to say ‘no’ can lead to resentment and emotional exhaustion.
To move from theory to practice, the session included interactive components:
- Role-Playing Scenarios: Students enacted common workplace scenarios (e.g., a family member demanding too much time, or a colleague overstepping duties) and demonstrated how to respond assertively yet compassionately.
- Reflective Exercise: Staff members were asked to identify one area in their professional life where they struggle to set limits and brainstormed solutions with the facilitators.
The session was well received by the participants. Staff members actively engaged in discussions and shared their experiences.
Outcomes of the Activity:
- Develop insight into their own boundary-related challenges.
- Learn simple, applicable strategies to balance empathy with self-care.
