 Objective(s) of the Activity:

  1. To sensitise students to the importance of accessibility, empowerment, and dignity for persons with disabilities.
  2. To enable experiential learning through interaction with NGOs, artists, and organisations working in the field of disability and rehabilitation.
  3. To align with NAAC criteria on academic extension, skill development, and community engagement.

Activity Overview:

As part of the department’s extension activities, 20 students from the first year and a few from the third year B.A. Psychology were taken to the Purple Fest, held at Entertained Society Goa (ESG). This international event brought together various organisations, schools, artists, and individuals working to create an inclusive society.

The event started off with a lively Zumba session, which was fun, energetic, and set a positive tone for the entire day. Students enthusiastically participated and soaked in the inclusive and celebratory atmosphere.

Students had the opportunity to visit and interact with different stalls set up by NGOs from across India, all of which showcased their unique initiatives for persons with disabilities. One of the highlights of the event was watching a live painting session by an artist with a disability, which was both inspiring and thought-provoking.

The students also explored a sensory room that offered various sensory stimuli, providing them with insights into sensory experiences and interventions. A special vocational training session was conducted by the COOJ team, where they spoke about their STEPEN program – an initiative focusing on psychosocial rehabilitation and skill-building for individuals with disabilities and mental health concerns.

Additionally, the students witnessed performances by children from various special schools in Goa, which highlighted the immense talent and potential of differently-abled individuals. A particularly memorable moment was experiencing the Purple Drum Circle, an inclusive rhythmic activity that celebrated community, creativity, and joy.

 Outcomes of the Activity:

  • Enhanced student awareness and understanding of the lived experiences of persons with disabilities.
  • Greater sensitivity and empathy towards inclusivity, accessibility, and psychosocial rehabilitation.
  • Increased knowledge of various NGOs and programs that support and empower persons with disabilities.
