Objective(s) of the Activity:
- To create awareness among students about various types of online scams, frauds, and cyber threats.
- To educate students on safe digital practices and responsible online behaviour.
Activity Overview:
The NSS and NCC units of Carmel College, in collaboration with the Department of Information Technology, organised a Cyber Security Awareness Session for students on 17th October 2025. The session was conducted by Dr. Solley Thomas, Head of the Department of Information Technology. This activity was conducted in line with the circular issued by the Directorate of Higher Education, which encouraged higher education institutions to promote cyber safety and digital literacy among students.
During the session, Dr. Thomas discussed various types of online scams and frauds, explaining how they occur through actions such as clicking on unknown links, sharing OTPs, and interacting with unverified sources. She also addressed the risks associated with social media, including deceptive online friendships, stalking, and cyberbullying. The session focused on preventive measures and highlighted ways to identify and avoid such cyber traps.
In addition to the session, students were made aware of cyber security issues through informative posters displayed on the IT department’s notice board, which reinforced the importance of safe online practices. Students participated actively and expressed that the session enhanced their understanding of safe online behaviour and responsible digital engagement.
Outcomes of the Activity:
- Students gained knowledge about different forms of cyber threats and how to prevent falling victim to online scams and frauds.
- The session fostered awareness on the importance of digital safety, responsible online interaction, and protection of personal information.
