Activity Overview

The Postgraduate Department of Food Technology, Carmel College of Arts, Science and Commerce for Women, Nuvem, organised a hands-on workshop on Urban Gardening and Sustainable Cultivation Practices on 30th September 2025 in PGCR 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., intending to provide students with practical skills in urban-based cultivation of vegetables and sustainable gardening techniques. The resource person for the session was Ms. Liza Pinheiro, who shared her expertise in innovative methods of growing vegetables in limited spaces.

The workshop began with a welcome address by Ms. Inoska Mendes, followed by a prayer led by Ms. Renelly Fernandes. Ms. Amisha Naik felicitated the guest with a potted plant. Ms. Liza Pinheiro then conducted an engaging session that included a practical demonstration on repotting plants, preparing soil mixes and cultivating different varieties of vegetables, including creepers and climbers, through unconventional methods such as using grow bags, buckets and other space-saving containers. Each student was given a gardening kit comprising pots, seeds and their own prepared organic soil mix, enabling them to begin their individual gardening journey.

The session concluded with a question-and-answer round. A vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Inoska Mendes, acknowledging the efforts of the guest speaker, after which a group photograph was taken to mark the conclusion of the workshop. Overall, the activity successfully combined knowledge and practice, encouraging students to adopt sustainable urban gardening methods and develop hands-on skills in organic cultivation.
