The History Department of Carmel College of Arts, Science and Commerce for Women, organised a vibrant and thought-provoking Poster Competition on 14th August 2025, as part of the 79th Independence Day. The event aimed to blend art with history, encouraging students to express the nation’s freedom journey in a visual and creative form. The chosen theme Through the Eyes of Art: Indian Independence Saga inspired participants to portray pivotal moments, unsung heroes, and the cultural spirit of the independence movement.

A total of six teams enthusiastically took part, each bringing forward distinctive interpretations. From intricate sketches and paintings, to mixed-media collages, the posters reflected a deep sense of patriotism and a well-researched historical approach. The competition was judged by Asst. Prof. Mr. Meetal Raikar and Counsellor Ms. Michelle Teles, who provided insightful feedback to the participants. They praised the creativity and innovative presentation styles adopted by the teams.

The event lasted for two hours, during which the atmosphere was charged with discussion, and mutual appreciation among participants and the audience. The entire programme was coordinated by Asst. Prof. Mr. Agnelo Dias. The winners and all participants were honoured at a special felicitation ceremony. Team 4 comprising of Ms. Purvi Haldankar and Ms. Swathi Naik, was awarded the first place, while Team 6 which included Ms. Swincy Vaz and Ms. Anzea Fernandes, secured the second place. All participants received participation certificates in recognition of their efforts. Asst. Prof. Mr. Sanford Pereira, the Department-in-Charge, delivered the vote of thanks, marking the conclusion of the event.

The competition not only showcased artistic talent but also deepened the students’ understanding of India’s independence saga. Such initiatives by the History Department reaffirm the importance of integrating art into the study of History.
