The department of chemistry organized a field trip to Goa College of Agriculture on January 24, 2025. We arrived at the college at 9:40 a.m. and were warmly welcomed by the principal of the college who provided us with an insightful overview of the college’s main objectives and courses, showcasing their commitment to education and sustainability.

A teacher escorted us to the vermicomposting unit, where we learned about the specific species of worms used and the significance of vermicompost in sustainable agriculture.

Next, we walked to an apiary, where we observed beehives being managed and maintained. We also learned that Apis cerana indica was the only domesticated species on campus.

At the soil analysis and testing lab, we were introduced to various instruments, like the pH meter, Spectrophotometer, Flame photometer and atomic absorption spectrometry device. We were also told about the different steps involved in soil testing and he emphasized the importance of soil analysis in agriculture and environmental sustainability.

Finally, we visited the mushroom cultivation area, where a few senior students guided us through the process of mushroom production. We learned simple techniques for emulating their methods, providing valuable insights into sustainable food production.

The field trip to GCOA was an enriching experience. We enjoyed the trip and appreciated the hands-on training experience.
