Carmel College of Arts, Science and Commerce for Women, Nuvem celebrated the 74 th  Independence Day of our nation on 15 th  August 2020, with the unfurling of the tri-colour at the college campus at 8.30 am.

On the eve of Independence Day, the Staff of Carmel College held a programme in the administration block to honour our nation, while maintaining social distance norms. The function began with a prayer lead by Ms. Gladys D’Souza, invoking the Almighty’s blessings on our nation and its frontline workers especially in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. (Sr.) Maria Lizanne A.C., the Vice-Principal in her address spoke on the importance of 15 th  August, with reference to our nation’s independence and the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady.

The staff was infused with patriotism with the melodious singing of “Bharat amcho desh”, and a medley of “Sare jahan se acha and Vande Mataram” by Dr. Celia Braganza, Ms. Priyanka Rodrigues and Ms. Cialini Fernandes, accompanied by Mr. Jeffrey Viegas on the guitar. Dr.  Madhavi Naik recited a poem in hindi titled ‘Gatha Kranti Ki’. Dr. Aldina Braganza, the officiating Principal in her address stressed on the need to have an independent mind for an interdependent nation. She mentioned that as Indians we are able to identify another Indian when we travel abroad, emphasizing on the common thread that binds us as Indians. She also urged students to respect and enjoy each other’s differences.

The results of the online competitions organized on the occasion were declared by Dr. Michelle Fernandes. For the digital poster competition, on the theme; “What Independence means to you?” the first place was won by Ms. Nikita Kumari of SY B.Sc, and the second place by Xenia Fernandes of TY BA. In the essay competition, ‘Tell us your thoughts in 500 words’ the first place was bagged by Ms. Lauren Divya Fernandes of SY BA and the second place by Ms. Natasha Palha of SY BA. For the poetry competition entries were in English, Hindi and Konkani. The first place was won by Ms. Sakshi S. Borkar of SY BA for the poem titled “Tu hi hai desh, tu hi hai samaaj” and the second place was shared by Ms. Natasha Palha and Ms. Lauren Divya Fernandes of SY BA for their poems ‘Breakfree’ and ‘My meaning of Independence’ respectively.

The program concluded with the singing of the national anthem.
