The Department of Chemistry, Carmel College for Women, Nuvem, Goa organized a 10 day certificate course on self-defense for women from November 6-17, 2014 for 7 students. Since domestic violence and sexual assault are, by far, the most common types of violence women experience, this self-defense course was conducted to teach our students basic physical defense skills, to recognise and defend against assaults and to promote assertiveness, confidence and self-worth.

Our Instructor for this course was Mr. Leslee Meitei, Black belt, 3rd Dan, Martial Arts who has been practicing for 15 years. Originally trained with International Academy for learning Martial Arts, Manipur, India and recognized by International Martial Arts Association, H.Q-Puerto Rico, International Combat Kung-Fu Union, H.Q-Latvia, and World Martial Arts Association, H.Q-UK.

The sessions started with a very intense warm-up followed by several self-defense tactics (block techniques, fist and palm strikes, kickboxing) and techniques for breaking an attacker’s grasp. Mr. Leslee Meitei demonstrated how to get out of attack scenarios by showing it in various steps and practiced one step at a time between two partners. Throughout the class, the instructor came around and offered feedback on the students form and force.

The students completed the course with a firm build-up of self-confidence and self-esteem. They also learnt how to size up a situation and decide what to do, besides also learning how to avoid situations before they happen and being aware. Overall they learnt a lot of moves and manoeuvres to act swiftly in the given situation and they had ample opportunities to practice the same in the classes conducted.
