The Department of Zoology In collaboration with Dept. of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Govt. of Goa organized a ‘Free Pet Health Care camp and Veterinary Clinic’ in the college campus on 27th September 2014 as a part of their Institutional Community Outreach Programme during the Golden Jubilee year. The villagers were informed of this facility through the Parish portals. In all, 15 canids, belonging to 5 breeds were examined for general health and specific clinical presentations. A few feral dogs from the campus were also brought to the campsite for examination and treatment. Also, 11 animals received Anti-Rabies vaccine free of cost. The experimental rats from the Zoology Laboratory were also examined. During this programme, the in-charge Officer of the Vasco Veterinary Hospital, Atanasia Fernandes, spoke on ‘Tips for Pet Care and common ailments of pets’. This was followed with an interactive session where the pet-owners sought advice on a range of issues concerning their pet’s health. Also, on the occasion, a number of informatory panels on pets sent by Dr. Gustav Pinto were displayed at the venue. Dr. Natasha Coutinho of the Sonsoddo AHVS Hospital conducted a few minor surgical procedures, assisted by Shri Lawrenco Barretto, an animal attendant. Three veterinary health care product dealers displayed their merchandize and also gave away free samples to the needy. Dr. Sr. Aradhana inaugurated the workshop and appealed to the villagers to avail of such Institutional Community outreach programmes that our college organizes. The Veterinary team participated in this camp with a lot of enthusiasm and demonstrable expertise. The programme was also attended by students of all three streams, besides faculty members and villagers of Nuvem.
