ECON, an inter-class competition was organized by the Department of Economics, Carmel College on 20th and 21st, January, 2016. The events of ECON aimed to provide the students of all the streams a glimpse of the economic world and an opportunity to exhibit their journalistic, entrepreneurial, creative and technical skills. The theme of the event was ‘Environment-Economy Interlinkages’. At the inaugural, Principal, Dr. Sr. Aradhana AC, symbolically planted a coconut sapling and spoke about the urgency of environment conservation for economic well-being. The off-stage competitions included ‘Step up’-a snake and ladder game based on knowledge and luck, ‘Hands-on Economics’-a hand painting event on the theme, ‘Ecological Resources of Goa’, and ‘EcoHumour’-graffiti portraying economic situations in a lighter vein. The highlight of the program was the on-stage event ‘EcoAnalyst’ in which teams had to prepare a short documentary film analyzing any socio-economic situation in Goa. The 10 teams which participated in this event presented thought-provoking documentaries on the current economic issues of Goa such as the declassification of the coconut tree, the problems of beach tourism, slums in Goa and the prospects of farming in Goa among others, based on first hand investigations and finding out the pulse of the people on the issues. The team comprising of Cleon D’Souza, Melito D’Costa, Vibha Algundgi and Archana Kurtarkar of the Postgraduate Department of Psychology won the first place for their poignant documentary on the mining imbroglio in Goa. The other major event was ‘EcoQuotient’-a quiz competition which was won by Celvina Mendes and Janicia Fernandes of TYBCom. The two-day event witnessed an enthusiastic participation from the students who displayed amazing talents and skills making the event a grand success. TYBCom won the ECON 2016 Championship Trophy. Prizes and certificates were distributed by Mrs. Renée Gama, Senior Teacher in Economics, Carmel Higher Secondary School and Dr. Sr. Aradhana AC, Principal, Carmel College. The event was supported by the Bank of Baroda, Benaulim Branch.
