The college celebrated our country’s 72 nd  Independence Day to pay tribute to the freedom fighters that fought for the independence of our country. The program began with the inauguration of the Student Council for the academic year 2018-19. This was followed by a cultural programme.

Ms. Shalvi Singh from SYBA started off the event by singing “Vande Mataram” creating a patriotic environment. A patriotic dance by the FY BA (A) followed. The NSS report for the previous academic year was presented after which the SY.B Com students performed “Kranti Ki Mashal Se”. A street play showcasing the plagues of our society and asking an important question, “Are we actually, truly free?” was presented by the NSS students. The annual report in the form of a power point presentation of the NCC followed the street play. The FY BA (B) students performed a dance on various patriotic songs. The mesmerizing voices of the students of the MA and M.Com filled the auditorium with the patriotic song of “Sandese Aate Hai” as a tribute to the soldiers.

Ms. Enola Pereira, the EPC Secretary, presented the annual report of the activities conducted by the Environment Protection Cell. Dr. Mini Vijayan, from the Department of Botany had a presentation on the importance of “Saving the Taj”.  The final cultural programme for the day was a presentation of the attire of the different states of Indian by the TYB.Com students, sending the message of Unity in diversity.

The Principal, Dr. Sr. Maria Aradhana A.C. spoke to the gathering on the real meaning of freedom, stressing that today it is more a freedom for than a freedom from. She emphasized that freedom means to choose the right, the noble, the just, the true, turning from selfishness to selflessness, from greed to generosity, from falsehood to sincerity. Wishing the staff and students a happy independence day, she ended with the words from the famous Hindi song, ‘ Hum laye hai toofan se kishti nikal ke… is desh ko rakhna mere bacchon sambhal ke…’

Prizes for the various activities held  earlier in the week was distributed.

Ms. Elaine Furtado, General Secretary proposed the vote of thanks.

The celebration culminated with the singing of the National Anthem.
